Cockroach Control in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote
Lanzarote scores 19/20 for season length in our risk index — there is no cockroach off-season here. What Puerto del Carmen owners and landlords need to do.

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote’s largest resort and the island’s densest concentration of foreign residents. It sits entirely within the municipality of Tías, which has around 21,600 inhabitants — and of the roughly 6,900 UK nationals living on Lanzarote, Tías is the municipality they choose first. Germans, Irish and Scandinavians follow the same pattern. Island-wide, close to 30% of the population is foreign.
That mix of permanent residents, second homes and holiday lets, stacked along six kilometres of seafront, creates a specific pest problem — and one that is genuinely unlike the mainland.
The Island’s Risk Profile Is Lopsided
Lanzarote scores 63 out of 100, “High”, in our Spain Pest Risk Index. That’s well below Málaga (94) or Marbella (85). But look at the sub-scores and the picture inverts:
- Season length 19/20 — near maximum. This is the important one.
- Temperature 12/20 — mild rather than baking
- Humidity 12/20 — arid; the island gets very little rain
- Drainage infrastructure 9/20 — relatively modern resort plumbing
- Population density 11/20
Translation: Lanzarote isn’t intense, it’s relentless. Winter days sit around 14–23°C and summer around 21–30°C, so there is no cold snap that resets populations. The index names the American cockroach as the island’s dominant species — the large, drain-and-garden one.
No Off-Season
The mainland calendar peak is May to October. Puerto del Carmen has no equivalent trough — a January sighting means the same thing an August sighting does. Treat when you see activity, not when the calendar says to.
Why Puerto del Carmen Properties Are Vulnerable
The resort runs from the old harbour to the airport, and each stretch has a different weak point:
- The Old Town and Los Mojones, around the working fishing harbour — the oldest drain runs, and where the American cockroach comes up into ground-floor properties.
- The central strip along Avenida de las Playas — bars, kitchens and dense apartment blocks on shared risers. This is where German cockroaches move between units.
- Los Pocillos and Matagorda, toward the airport — quieter, lower-rise, heavy on holiday apartments and villas with small gardens and pools.
The single biggest entry route on this island is a dry drain. Arid air plus a flat that sits empty for three weeks between guests equals an evaporated U-bend — an open pipe from the sewer straight into the bathroom. If you let your property, this is the failure mode to design against.
Mosquitoes: Lanzarote Is the Exception
The Asian tiger mosquito is established in 15 of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities. The Canary Islands are not among them, and Lanzarote specifically has recorded no Aedes detection at all. Tiger mosquito specimens turned up in Tenerife in September 2023 and in port containers since; Aedes aegypti was found in Fuerteventura in 2017 and eradicated by 2019. Each incursion has been met with trapping and fumigation.

Practically: screens are worth fitting, repellent matters less here than on the Costa Blanca, and emptying standing water solves most of it.
What Actually Works Here
Step 1: Fix the dry-drain problem permanently
Fit stainless-steel drain covers on every outlet, and for properties that stand empty, pour a little cooking oil into rarely-used floor drains — it floats on the water and slows evaporation for weeks. On arrival, run every tap and shower for 30 seconds before anything else.

Step 3: Build it into the changeover
