American Cockroach in Spain – The One That Flies

How to identify and deal with American cockroaches in Spain. The large, flying cockroach common in Spanish drains and gardens.

By Spain Pest Guide · Updated 26 February 2026 · 7 min read

If you’ve seen a large, reddish-brown cockroach fly across your terrace at night, you’ve met the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). It’s the largest cockroach species commonly found in Spanish homes, and yes – it flies.

Despite its name, the American cockroach is found worldwide in warm climates and is very much at home in southern Spain. It primarily lives outdoors in drains, sewers, and garden areas but enters homes through open doors, windows, and – most commonly – through drain pipes.

Key Takeaways

  • American cockroaches are large (35–40mm), reddish-brown, and can fly on warm evenings
  • They live in drains and sewers and enter homes mainly through pipes
  • Seeing one in summer is normal in Spain and does not mean you have an infestation
  • Drain covers with fine mesh are the single most effective prevention measure
  • Gel bait around drain pipe entries handles persistent problems

How to Identify an American Cockroach

  • Size: 35–40mm (the largest species you’ll encounter – roughly the length of your thumb)
  • Colour: Reddish-brown with a glossy sheen and a yellow-brown marking behind the head
  • Wings: Fully developed. Both males and females can fly, particularly on warm evenings
  • Behaviour: Attracted to lights at night. Often seen on terraces, patios, and near outdoor drains

Why Do American Cockroaches Enter Your Home?

American cockroaches prefer outdoor environments. When they appear inside a Spanish home, it’s almost always because:

  • Municipal drain fumigation displaced them from the sewer system
  • Hot weather drove them to seek water and cooler conditions indoors
  • Open windows or doors at night attracted them toward interior lights
  • Damaged drain covers gave them direct access from the sewer to your bathroom

Seeing one or two American cockroaches during summer is common in Spanish properties and doesn’t indicate an infestation. However, if you’re seeing them regularly, it likely means they have an entry point from the drain system.

Don't Panic

A single American cockroach indoors during summer is normal in Spain. It likely wandered in from the municipal drain system. It does not mean you have an infestation. Seal your drains and it won’t happen again.

How Do You Get Rid of American Cockroaches?

Drain protection is everything. The single most effective measure against American cockroaches is preventing them from entering through drains. Install drain covers with fine mesh on all bathroom and kitchen drains. This alone stops the majority of indoor sightings.

For homes with persistent drain entry, apply Maxforce Gel around the perimeter of drain pipes where they enter the bathroom or kitchen.

For outdoor areas, perimeter treatment with a residual insecticide spray can reduce populations around your property.
