Guardamar's pine forest and river mouth are beautiful – and a breeding ground for pests. Local pest control for expats and property owners on the Costa Blanca.

Guardamar del Segura is one of the greenest towns on the Costa Blanca – golden beaches backed by protected dunes and la pineda, a coastal pine forest planted over a century ago. Around a third of its 18,000 residents are foreign, mostly British, German, and Scandinavian, with a UK-curriculum international school in town.
That setting is the catch. The pine forest, the Segura river mouth, and the low dune wetlands wrap the town in exactly the habitat pests need. Warm summers around 27°C, mild 15°C winters, and 300-plus days of sunshine mean the season is long.
Here’s what you’ll face and what to do about it.
Why Guardamar Properties Are Vulnerable
The town’s housing splits the risk:
- Beachfront apartments near the pinewoods – Shared plumbing risers and forest-edge humidity bring German cockroaches indoors and give ants a foothold.
- Inland urbanisations and villas – Gardens and irrigation draw the large American cockroach from the surrounding pine and scrub.
- Properties near the river mouth – The Segura estuary and dune wetlands are a serious mosquito source.
Peak Season Alert
Guardamar’s pest pressure peaks June through September. The pinewoods also drive a second, separate problem: processionary caterpillars from January to April. Two seasons, two very different threats – plan for both.
The Species You’ll Meet
German cockroach (small, light brown, two stripes) – The indoor breeder in apartments. One means many. Act immediately.
American cockroach (large, reddish-brown, flies) – Comes in from the pinewoods and gardens, especially on warm nights.
Oriental cockroach (dark, glossy, slow) – Turns up near drains in older ground-floor properties.

What Actually Works
Step 1: Seal the entry points
- Fit drain covers on every kitchen and bathroom outlet.
- Seal gaps around pipes and behind air-conditioning units.
- Check terrace and garden door sweeps – the forest edge is close and busy.
Step 2: Use professional-grade gel bait
Maxforce Gel Bait
Best for: German cockroaches in kitchens and bathrooms
The gel professional controllers use across the Costa Blanca. Roaches carry it back to the nest, wiping out colonies you never see. One syringe treats a full apartment.
Step 3: Run a seasonal routine
Apply gel bait in April, refresh in June, top up in August, and treat again in October.
Other Pests to Watch in Guardamar
- Mosquitoes – This is a real hotspot. The Segura estuary and dune wetlands breed both common and tiger mosquitoes, which bite in daylight. Screen every window, empty standing water weekly, and read our mosquitoes in Spain guide.
- Processionary caterpillars – La pineda means processionary caterpillars are a genuine danger from January to April. Keep dogs off the forest floor – the hairs can kill a pet.
- Ants – Argentine ants swarm ground-floor kitchens and terraces near the pines all summer. Bait the trail; see our ants in Spain guide.
