Drain Protection Against Cockroaches in Spain
How to stop cockroaches entering your Spanish home through the drains. The single most effective prevention method for properties in Spain.
If there’s one thing you do to prevent cockroaches in your Spanish home, make it this: protect your drains. Municipal drain systems in Spain are the primary entry point for both American and Oriental cockroaches, and a simple drain cover can stop the vast majority of invasions.
Why Drains Are the Problem
Spain’s municipal sewer network runs directly beneath residential streets. In many towns across Spain – from Fuengirola to Alicante to Barcelona – the pipes connecting your bathroom and kitchen to the main sewer are direct, unfiltered routes.
When the Ayuntamiento conducts drain fumigation (typically in late May, August, and October), cockroaches are displaced from the sewer system. They travel upward through the pipes and emerge through your bathroom floor drain, kitchen sink, or shower drain.
This is why clean homes get cockroaches. It has nothing to do with hygiene – it’s infrastructure.
Drain protection is the single highest-impact thing any homeowner can do. I've seen apartments go from weekly sightings to zero – just by installing proper drain covers and running unused taps.
4 Entry Points Every Spanish Kitchen Has
Cockroaches exploit the same gaps in nearly every Spanish apartment. Here is where to look.
Pipe Gaps
Where pipes pass through walls under the sink. Seal with silicone.
Floor Drain
Kitchen and bathroom drains are highways for cockroaches. Use drain covers.
Door Sweep Gap
Gap under terrace/balcony doors. Install a door sweep or draft excluder.
Ventilation
Extractor fans and wall vents. Fit fine mesh screens over openings.

Install fine-mesh drain covers on every drain in your home:
- Bathroom floor drains – the most common entry point
- Shower drains – especially walk-in showers
- Kitchen sink drain – when not in use
- Washing machine drain – often overlooked
Look for covers with a mesh fine enough that insects cannot pass through. Standard drain grates in Spanish bathrooms have gaps large enough for cockroaches to enter.
Where to Buy Drain Covers
- Amazon.es – search for “tapa desagüe anti insectos” or “drain cover insect”
- Ferreterías (hardware stores) – most stock basic mesh covers
- Chinese bazaars – often have inexpensive stainless steel mesh covers
- Leroy Merlin / Bricomart – for higher-quality options
Additional Drain Prevention
Beyond covers, these steps further reduce drain entry:
- Run water regularly – if a drain isn’t used for several days (common in holiday homes), the water trap evaporates and cockroaches can pass through. Run every tap and flush every toilet weekly.
- Pour bleach down drains monthly – a capful of bleach in each drain kills bacteria and deters cockroaches. Do this in the evening.
- Seal the gap around drain pipes – where pipes enter through walls or floors, use silicone sealant to close any gaps.
- Apply gel bait around drain entry points – a small dot of Maxforce Gel near each drain provides a second line of defence.
Holiday Homes: Special Attention
If your Spanish property is unoccupied for weeks at a time, drain protection is even more critical. Water traps evaporate, giving cockroaches free passage from the sewer into your home.
Before leaving:
- Run all taps to fill water traps
- Cover all drains with mesh covers or cling film
- Close toilet lids
