Brown-Banded Cockroach in Spain – The Bedroom Cockroach
How to identify Brown-Banded cockroaches in Spain. Unlike other species, they prefer bedrooms and living rooms. Identification, control, and treatment guide.
The Brown-Banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa) is the least common of the four cockroach species found in Spain, but it’s also the most unusual in its behaviour. Unlike other species that gravitate toward kitchens and bathrooms, the Brown-Banded cockroach prefers warm, dry areas – including bedrooms and living rooms.
How to Identify a Brown-Banded Cockroach
- Size: 10–14mm (small, similar to the German cockroach)
- Colour: Light brown with two distinctive lighter bands across the wings and abdomen
- Wings: Males can fly short distances. Females have shorter wings and cannot fly.
- Key difference from German cockroach: Lighter overall colour, two horizontal bands instead of vertical stripes
Where You’ll Find Them
Brown-Banded cockroaches prefer elevated, warm locations – the opposite of most species:
- Behind picture frames and wall decorations
- Inside wardrobes and closets
- On or near ceilings
- Inside electronic equipment
- Behind light switch plates
This species avoids water, so you’re unlikely to find them in bathrooms or near drains.
Don't Confuse With German Cockroaches
Brown-Banded cockroaches are often misidentified as German cockroaches. The key difference: Brown-Banded have two horizontal light bands across the body, while German cockroaches have two vertical dark stripes behind the head.
Control
Because Brown-Banded cockroaches don’t follow the typical drain-entry pattern, gel bait placement needs to target different areas:
- Apply gel bait behind furniture, near warm electronics, and in upper cabinet areas
- Focus on bedrooms and living spaces, not just kitchens
- Use sticky traps near warm spots to confirm their presence
